Looking to organise a world-class special event in Harare? Then you MUST come and meet Swiss-trained Gitta Khatai, Assistant Banqueting Manager at Meikles Hotel – whose credentials will fill you, our customer, with super-confidence!
Born in Harare, when she left Marondera High School she was looking at various possibilities. “I picked up a flyer and saw a uniform someone had on – she was smiling, professional-looking and I loved it.”
The colourful brochure was from the International Hotel Management Institute in Switzerland. Gitta applied, was accepted and spent three-and-a-half years there, completing a double degree including honours in conjunction with the UK’s Manchester Metropolitan University.
Throughout this period she was spending six months at the school and six months on attachment to Sky Chefs Hotel in Switzerland incorporating housekeeping, food &beverage and banqueting. Still eager to soak up world-class skills she then spent a further year at Swiss Hotel Georgia, a winery resort and spa.
The quest to excel went on and, in 2011, Gitta spent two-and-a-half years doing her Masters degree at GAU American University in Cyprus specialising in hotel management, including a year-long thesis in the field “that sharpened my managerial skills for planning and projects.”
Since November last year Gitta has been displaying her prowess at Meikles Hotel where she and her inspired team take care of all functions, including Conferences from 10-200 people and Weddings for 100-250 guests.
“I have found a unique culture here,” she says. “It is very precise and everyone knows their role. Our banqueting department builds a dream for someone, starting with a core idea and then building it up to something really special.”
What events do they create and deliver? Weddings, Conferences, Exclusive VIP meetings and dinners, exhibitions, cocktails, corporate lunches, gala dinners and any special occasion, such as birthdays and anniversaries. The elegant Stewart Room holds 250 people for a dinner and is the most popular venue but there are 15 different venues available, including the Roof Top garden overlooking Africa Unity Square.
If you’ve got any event in mind you are warmly invited to come and meet Gitta and team at Meikles. She promises: “My international experience taught me that the customer is very important and teamwork is what makes everything happen exactly as expected. That’s what we do at Meikles.”
